History of Christ Church

Upper North Adelaide is situated across the River Torrens on a hill approximately one kilometre north of the city.  In this area, Bishop Augustus Short initiated the building of Christ Church North Adelaide in 1848 and the building was consecrated in 1849.  Bishop Short used the church as his pro cathedral until St Peter’s Cathedral was finished in 1872.

Christ Church Rectory in 1852

In 1852 the Rectory was built next door to the church and the present church hall was built in 1953.  The Memorial Garden abutting the church on its northern side was added in 1998.

The church and rectory are heritage listed. These buildings together with the adjacent Bishop's Court are considered by the National Trust to be of major significance.  The church is open to the public from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm daily.
